The present study aims to investigate the misconceptions of 11th grade students regarding the concepts of isomerism and hydrocarbon nomenclature. To conduct this research, a total of 548 students (265 girls and 283 boys) from various schools in Tehran and other cities within Tehran Province were randomly selected. Data collection was carried out using a diagnostic test consisting of eight multiple-choice questions. The validity of the test was confirmed by 15 faculty members from Farhangian University and high school chemistry teachers, and its reliability was established with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.84. A conceptual assessment method was employed to evaluate students’ understanding. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 26. The results indicated that 16.9% and 11.9% of 11th-grade students exhibited misconceptions in the concepts of isomerism and hydrocarbon nomenclature, respectively. The most common misunderstanding in isomerism was related to recognizing functional group isomers, while in hydrocarbon nomenclature, the primary misconception involved identifying the main chain. An analysis of the effect of gender on students’ misconceptions in these areas revealed no significant difference between the mean misconceptions of male and female students. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the content of the isomerism and hydrocarbon nomenclature sections in the 11th-grade chemistry textbook be reviewed and that teachers’ instructional methods be carefully reconsidered to address these misconceptions effectively.
